I do book repair work…
What’s the difference between book repair and book conservation?
Book Conservator:
- Focus: Preservation and long-term stability. The primary goal is to stabilize the item in its current state, prevent further deterioration, and retain as much of the original material and historical integrity as possible.
- Materials: Often works with rare, valuable, historically significant, or unique books and documents.
Book Repair Specialist:
- Focus: Functionality and usability. The main goal is to make the book usable again, often for circulation or practical purposes.
- Materials: Typically works with circulating library books, personal collections, or less rare/valuable items.
It doesn’t matter whether your books are monetarily valuable or not, they are your personal books and they have lived with you through the years. You’ll get a rich rewarding feeling when you have them properly repaired and put into pristine condition, and your heirs will appreciate your care of their literary heritage.

Cover and spine repair or replacement
Book covers and spines can often be reattached by using archival glue. In some cases an entirely new cover will be needed to be constructed to replace the old one.
Rebuilding signatures
Books are typically constructed by binding individual sections together then combining all the sections together into what’s called a text block. Over time these sections or signatures can detach from one another. When this happens in order to repair them they need to be reconnected either by using archival glue or by sowing them. Then reattaching the text block to the book’s outer cover.
Reattachment of loose leafs or pages
Sometimes just a few single pages will become detached, in cases like this archival glueing or archival tape can fix the problem.
Rebinding of signatures
Pamphlets and other ephemera printings can sometimes become historically important to preserve. Basic steps to begin this process include, cleaning and removal of acidic adhesive.
